Running a Marathon, the whole 46,145 yards

The Marathon, the ultimate endurance race, the common bucket list item, the new years resolution, the passion, the ego booster, the masochist's hobby. I finally thought, why not? The idea to run a marathon came from a mixture of ego, vanity, Facebook, bucket list, 2014 new years resolutions, etc. The idea was just the beginning. The race is long after that.

Alright, I got the idea. Next up, which one? Schedule, logistics and level of difficulty were considered. I finally settled on Napa as it would give me a few months to train, it was within driving distance and it was a flat course. Also March would mean cooler temperatures, which would help my cause. Now for shoes. I started with Vibram Five Finger as I had enjoyed running barefoot in the past. But my feet were pulp after 7-8 miles on asphalt. I needed the padding. So I decided to go with Asics Electro 33. Now running shoes are a religion and I will not get into that debate. You have all sorts of theories as to what works. I went for low price, minimal sole and light weight. Now I was ready to hit the ground running.

So how to choose a marathon training plan? Depends on how long will your training stretch and how many days a week you are willing to train. I made a hybrid plan after looking at a few websites. My goal was a 3:59:59 marathon. The training definitely tested my resolve. Running in the pre dawn darkness on cold winter mornings can make you question your sanity. Weekends had to be planned around long runs. Food had to be planned starting the previous night. One Sunday morning, I started running at 6am in the hope of the beating the rain forecast for 9am. I had 18 miles scheduled. It was cold and windy, but I was determined. A few minutes in, and the heavens open up. Here I was running in the rain. I couldn't run fast enough to keep myself warm and I started shivering. I felt like a moron. I questioned the purpose of this endeavor. I thought about a warm bed and a cup of hot chocolate. I eventually put mind over matter and slogged on for nearly 3 hours. I was cold and tired, but I felt accomplished. Life can be that way. You have your aims and goals. The going gets tough, and that's when the tough get going. You are done only when you decide you are done. On the plus side, I got to know my neighborhood very well. Running endless laps on the side streets introduced me to yard sales, friendly neighbors, pretty gardens, annoying dogs and rude drivers.

I used Mapmyrun to track my training. I thought it served the purpose without too many distractions. I highly recommend cold showers and ice baths for a quicker recovery after each workout. At one point, a few weeks into the training, I experienced sharp knee pain. I thought I had hit my limit at 12 miles, but it turned out my shoes were worn out. I'd advice new shoes after about 200 miles. I'd also suggest biking and weight training to help your knees. Oatmeal served well for a pre training meal and Cliff bars for snacks during longer runs. Three weeks before the marathon you begin your taper. A couple of days before the race, you load up on carbs and protein and avoid any exercise.

Finally, it was D-day! All the months of training had come to this. I was at the pinnacle of my fitness. I was pumped. It was time to get a run for my money. A few short speeches and we were off! I was feeling good. The numerous photographers and the cheering spectators lining the course made me feel like a celebrity. I waved and smiled. I high fived random people. I felt light and happy. Every step took me closer. I had some difficulty in pacing myself as I didn't have my watch and there were no clocks or pacers to be seen anywhere. I decided to ask my fellow runners every now and then to help me keep a steady pace. And then it came, I hit the proverbial wall at 20 miles. I was tiring out. This was the farthest I had ever run. I was wilting in the late morning heat. Where was that second wind? I stopped to take a drink. I couldn't start again! My legs simply refused. Eventually, I managed to stumble forward. I had to put mind over matter. I didn't want to stop again lest I might not be able to start again. My legs felt like jelly. I closed my eyes and I prayed hard. I cussed. I remembered all those hours of training. I thought about my goal of 3:59:59. I thought of my ego. I had never pushed myself that much before. And then the final stretch, the end was in sight. I saw the clock and my heart sank. It was 4:04. For a brief instant, I thought I'd have to do it again. But my tired legs kicked that thought into oblivion. Never again! Never have I been in that much pain. At the end of the race I thanked God for carrying me through, but also asked for forgiveness for cussing so much.

I have great respect for all marathon runners, Ironman triathletes and others who do masochistic feats. But I am done. given that it's my first marathon it is also my PR. I needed to use Paul Ryan's calculator to get a sub 4hr time. And since I like quitting when I'm in front, it was also my last marathon. There are lots of could haves and should haves. But I can't go through this again. I gave it my 100% on race day and I can't see myself going through months of training again. I learned that the race is no place for an ego boost, as people two or three times my age passed me. In fact the race is with yourself and your goals. As it is said, “a moment of pain is worth a lifetime of glory”. Well not exactly a moment, and not exactly a lifetime as well, but still... Wanna run?

Book Review: Sinner, The Catholic Guy's Funny, Feeble Attempts to Be a Faithful Catholic

Being a Catholic isn't easy. You have the devil, you have people and you have yourself getting in the way. Lino Rulli embodies the struggle of the guy next door living a Catholic life. This book makes you laugh, makes you cry and makes you cringe as you read Lino stumbling and fumbling his way through life.

Lino has an uncanny way of making you think in between his one liners. On soul mates "I can't imagine a loving God who counts the hairs on my head, loves me, and then says: 'I’ve created a soul mate for you.. good luck finding her.'" We have to trust God in being our wingman, but we have to be willing to take chances. On failure, "lots of people put their failures in the not-God's-plan category instead of the I-suck-at-that-category." We have to take responsibility for ourselves and suck it up sometimes. On temptation, "I fought, I struggled, I won-and I didn't give into temptation. Not exactly on my way to canonization, but I'm always grateful to God when I don't fall." We should celebrate the minor victories in our lives with God. On confession, "don't imagine you will confess something original to the priest. That's the sin of pride." This one cracked me up. Yes, the priest has heard every possible sin under the sun and the stars (if you prefer sinning by night).

Lino is brutally honest with his failings at finding a mate, with his pride after winning the Emmy, with his youthful misadventures (hilarious) and with his big nose. The chapter on him meeting the Pope is absolutely hilarious. I really wish I was there through that awkward episode. Or I wish JP-II wrote a chapter about his meeting with Lino. But the chapter also made me really want to visit the Vatican someday. Not that praying at the Vatican is any better than praying at home. But maybe it is just the ambiance that makes you feel closer to God.

This book has confirmed that "In the evening of life, we will be judged on love alone." (St John of the Cross). At the end of my life I want Jesus to say, as Lino writes, "Eternal life goes to Daniel. Well done my good and faith full servant." Lino makes Catholicism seem like a simple yet profound journey. I think I will see my faith in a more joyful way from here on.

Who Wants To Be A MILLIONAIRE?

One of my goals for 2013 was to become more financially savvy. Yeah, the eternal goal to retire at 40 and sip cocktails on a beach, while getting a shoulder massage. With that definitely achievable goal in mind, I set out out to become financially literate first and maybe savvy later. I had simple goals to begin with. One, don’t lose money. Two, stay ahead of inflation. Three, maybe actually make money.

One of the reasons investing right away is important is because of the power of compounding. Your money will double every 10 years if you get a 7% annual return. Or for the dreamers, it will double every 7 years if you get a 10% annual return. Now those are some sweet numbers. But numbers can work against you too. Yeah, no finance without numbers. Don’t lose money. If you had $100 and you lost $25. Now you have $75, a loss of 25%. But to get back to $100, you need a gain of 33% on the $75. The difference between loss and gain percentages gets worse for higher losses. Hence, stick to conservative sensible investments to reduce the risk of major initial losses which can seriously set you back.

Getting started. Yes, the internet has all the answers, including how to make dogs chase their tails. But when it comes to investing, there is a lot of BS out there and frankly it is not worth the effort sifting through BS, unless it is your thing. Investopedia is a good site to explain the meaning of terms and is a handy reference guide. But only books could give an orderly instruction to a blank slate like me. The following are the books I have read so far, in the order I read them.

1) Start Late, Finish Rich - This is a good and easy read for the uninitiated. It will introduce you to some investment ideas, whet your appetite for the subject and I think, most importantly, inspire you to begin.

2) The Intelligent Investor - It is the most well known investment book. Warren Buffett himself recommends it. It is well written, textbook style but tinder dry. Sometimes I had to force myself to read and get through a chapter. For completeness sake I read everything, even though I was not interested in some topics. The commentary on each chapter is an easier read. If you really must, you could skip the main chapter and read the commentary instead. This book definitely has all the instructions on how to become an investor and not a speculator.

3) Rich Dad Poor Dad - An epic waste of time. It is not even a feel good book. Those four hours of my life spent on reading it are never coming back. Well, none of my life is ever coming back, but you get the point.

I plan to read One Up On Wall Street next. But for now, let’s delve into what I have learned. First, close your mind to the mindless bragging by your friends who always seem to make money. One of my friends has sold all his stock three times in the last month or so. Every time the stock market goes up, he says he sells ALL his shares and he is waiting for the next crash. How can you sell all your shares every month? Buy low and sell high is a great idea, in theory or rather in your dreams. The question is, who has the crystal ball that will tell me when is low and when is high? Remember hindsight is 20/20, sometimes 20/10. And there are folks who go, I had told you to buy Tesla when it was $30, now it is $130. So Mr. Smartpants, did you put your money where your mouth was? Nope. Don’t listen to people who don’t bet on their own instincts.

The million dollar question, literally, is how to make money then? I concluded that I don’t have the time or the motivation to spend my leisure time on researching companies, reading earnings reports, calculating P/E ratios, etc. I am not making excuses. I know that if I don’t invest the time in researching, I cannot expect stupendous returns on my financial investments. So I settled for the conservative, semi-lazy person approach. I diversify between bonds and stocks. And diversify by industry in each of those categories. The easiest way to diversify is by buying mutual funds and ETF’s. And don’t forget that blue chip companies pay dividends. Some folk get excited only by looking at the increase of stock price over time. Dividends can and will bolster the ROI too. Also, read up on the concept of ‘dollar cost averaging’ if you are worried about market swings. The market has more mood swings, for the most obscure reasons, than women.

I could talk about gold, real estate, foreign currency, etc. as investment vehicles. But I think I will stick to level 1 for now, and that is stocks and bonds. Roll the dice, let’s partake in the great game of capitalism.

Book review – (Super+1)*Freakonomics – Exploring the power of incentives.

Freakonomics and its sequel Superfreakonomics are the products of some out of the box thinking by a 'rogue' economist about seemingly mundane everyday life matters. It is about economics at work in everyday life. Its about economics stripped down of its complex theories, formulas and obscure language. Its about 'exploring the hidden side of everything', how every action has a hidden motive or incentive that drives it, how statistics can be use to quantify anything and everything. Its about stripping down a layer or two from the surface of modern life and seeing what is happening underneath.

One of the most intriguing idea discussed is about how legalization of abortion may have cause crime to drop in recent years. The author provides various statistics to disregard other possible causes like gun control, strong economy, better laws, etc. He feels that the potential criminals are knocked out before they are born as most unwanted babies are potential criminals. If true, its a perfect example of the law of unintended consequences. Its like the proverbial butterfly that flaps its wings on one continent and eventually cause a hurricane on another. I am firmly against abortion and feel that it must not be legalized even for a noble cause like crime reduction. Abortion is murder. Full stop.

Some interesting stuff for men and women looking for soul mates is discussed on pages 80-85. Supposedly men want to look taller and earn more while women wanna weigh less, look good and be blond. At least those are the conclusions drawn after analyzing profiles on dating websites. What men should do to get a date? Say they are looking for a long term relationship, earn a lot, be tall, and have a lot of hair on the head. Women can read the book to see what men want.

He also discusses the power of information, how the Ku Klux Klan was countered just by leaking their secrets, why schoolteachers may and do cheat, whether homes with guns or swimming pools are more dangerous for kids to play, does your name matter for your future, etc.

Superfreakonomics has some equally fascinating analysis of mundane matters. The book begins with some analysis about how the television supposedly changed the thinking of rural India. He also mentions some things about Indian men which might, let me say, make them feel inferior. And then he rants on with a lot of stuff about prostitutes which I think is included just as a marketing gimmick. Those who are not very comfortable with the topic can skip ahead to the next chapter as all the chapters are unrelated to each other. There are a few interesting things discussed like whether your birthday matters if you wanna become a sports star, why do less people die when doctors are on strike, how to live longer. He also discusses why terrorism is over hyped, like I had discussed in The bigger killers

I don't like the fact that he thinks man is basically selfish and works solely for his own benefit. But sadly his analysis of hard numbers corroborate his belief. The author also makes some weird arguments against global warming but he has clarified some of the finer points in his blog. But he mentions that meat based diets are the biggest contributors of green house gases. You can read my post SAY NO TO NON VEG FOODS

Some good quotes in the books
-Economics is about how people get what they want.
-Morality represents the way people would like the world to work, economic represents how it actually does work.
-Emotion is the enemy of rational argument.

On the whole the books are a good read. The books are fast and jump from one topic to another. The author has a good sense of humor which spices up tons of statistics he uses to illustrate or back his claims. Go explore the hidden side of everything and get freaked out.

Modern Art – Crap is the name of the game.

Everyone talks about the modern world going to the dogs. Our culture, lifestyle, moral values, etc. but i didn't know that even our art was going to the dogs too. Sorry my canine friends, I am sure your art would be better than the human modern art.

I visited the Weisman Art Museum on the UMN-Twin Cities campus to check out some modern 'art'. I thought that I would come across as cultured and intellectual by visiting art museums. But I wasn't prepared for the rubbish that was in store for me. Utter crap is called art. The more vague and hideous a painting or sculpture is, the more it is revered. Anything simple is considered unintelligent. I felt the world has lost its aesthetic sense. Things that you might not even spare a passing glance at a garage sale is kept at the museum. Some paintings were so hideous that I may get nightmares tonight. On the other end of the scale, things might go into the thrash bin are hung as paintings. There is a 'dirty paper' which is hung up as a piece of art. Read the description in the adjoining picture. Then there was plain colored paper. And some pieces of paper which looked like scribbles of an elementary school kid. And some more paper with water color splashes on it which looked very similar to my rough paintings when I first used watercolors. Oh and for the piece de resistance, there was an exhibit that consisted of a plane steel rod keep diagonal to the corner of the room. In the description it said, the steel rod enhanced the feeling of space. There was so much stuff which really taxed your imagination. You had to think hard to find something worthwhile about the painting.

And the best part was the talk between the guide and other visitors. How such nonsense could conjure such ideas and interpretations is beyond me. These rich people have no other work but a ponder over useless stuff like what the artist was trying to portray, or what led him to paint that particular piece of crap. I bet the artist is laughing his ass off at such in depth analysis of something that was meant to be nonsense! Here are some of the phrases and sentences used by people to describe the paintings; “minimalist and conceptual”,”rejected convention and tradition”,”Individualism, uniqueness, and personal expression were prized.”,”Artists labored to bare their inner souls, and each necessarily forged a new and different visual vocabulary.”,”look closely for a deeper perspective of the openness of the era”,”broke free from the bonds of yore” I could stop myself from laughing. I unwittingly attended the best stand up comedy show.

There were some positives from the visit. It inspired this post. It made me treasure my $1 painting even more. It helped me pass a lazy winter afternoon for free. It gave me a back up profession. Yes an artist. A crap expert like me can definitely put crap on paper.

Oh Leonardo, O Michelangelo, where art thou?

Kambaqt ishq – Kambaqht movie

I know I had promised Himesh bhai that my blog would have only His movies’ reviews. But I have to make an exception for the masterpiece ‘Kambaqth Ishq’ maybe because the copyrighted himesh dialogue ‘back off’ was used in one scene. My friends and I decided, much against expert opinion, to watch this movie in the theatre. I was hoping that Akshay Kumar’s farting spree - which included farts like Welcome, Singh is King, Tashaan, and CCTC - would come to an end, whereas Kareena’s striping spree would continue.

The highest point was right before the movie started because everything went downhill from the beginning itself. To call the wedding party melee as donkey stuff would be an insult to donkeys. And when you thought things couldn’t get worse, there were jokes like an actor trying to make a joke of the words ‘suar’, sue and ‘suee’ (needle) sounding the same. Another joke was when Akshay shouts that he wants imported anaesthesia instead of local anaesthesia.

The movie hit new lows with each scene, and so did kareena’s neck line. The only thing going high was amrita’s hem line. In today’s materialistic films, it was ironical to see serious shortage of dress material. The film was trying really hard to make people laugh. One should watch the scene where Akshay is searched for drugs. Disgusting. I can’t imagine any right minded person enjoying such stuff. Kareena kept giving slutty looks throughout the movie. The songs fared no better. There was just noise. But then that helped them blend with the movie which also was noise.

The director seemed to have forgotten the old adage, once in a hole, stop digging! He tried desperately to spice up a weak script with words like bitch and bastard at regular intervals. The dry scenes were flooded with people in minimal clothing. Okay the blonds were usually attractive, but how can you keep staring for hours at a string of skimpily dressed babes on a big screen?

For those who like some story and logic, I am afraid they too will be disappointed. The story is the same old ‘guy gal hate each other and then fall in love’. Game set match to Cliché. The movie bordered on a porno flick in the sense the only aim of the movie was to show skin. To hell with a storyline. Logic too took a serious beating in some scenes, like when gangsters couldn’t catch kareena and amrita running away on foot. The locales of some scenes were great though. And I think that was the only high point of this tamasha.

About the guest stars. Stallone does well with his growling and dishum dishum. Denise was lukewarm, or maybe she was hot but kareena had stolen all the thunder and heat by then. The movie ends as expected with an ending that might have been happy or sad. I don’t know which because I didn’t find any story. I feel we should have been awarded a certificate of appreciation for our courage and determination to sit through 3rd degree torture on a Saturday night.

Aero Show - Leaving you open mouthed!

This Valentine’s Day, I thought I was gonna date some of the hottest birds of the sky. But I was left sorely disappointed. The Aero Show was a big big let down. You have to take my word, despite the glowing reports you must have read in the media. My friends will vouch for me when I say that the Aero Show was a big waste of time, energy and money. It was ‘wow’ for about five minutes. After that I opened my mouth only to yawn. In fact, I was so traumatized by the experience that I start yawning whenever I see anything flying!

This Aero Show was supposed to be the biggest in South Asia. I guess the biggest need not always be the best. Guys and gals who think otherwise are mistaken. The entry was chaotic. There were just two entry points for thousands of spectators. It soon turned into a free for all shoving and pushing contest. The Ram Sene guys would have had a field day in this ‘V-Day bash’. After a great struggle we stumbled through the checkpoint. We were in! The air show had begun. But it was boring. The same jet went back and forth numerous times. Then it landed and another took off. And did the same thing. There were no formations, no heart stopping stunts, nothing. Then some choppers came and tried some things. I think we enjoyed that part a little because we were so fed up by then, that we might have enjoyed V.P. Agarwal’s lectures then. The peacocks (what a cheesy name for a combat machine!) tried their best. But that also fell well short of expectations.

After a couple of hours on the scorching tarmac, we had had enough. We thought the stalls might have had something to save the day. Alas, they were an even bigger disappointment. There was nothing in there besides models. We had to satisfy ourselves by gazing at models. Nope, not hot sexy babes, but miniature plastic models of jets and choppers. Even the kids looked bored. No presentations, no actual parts on display, no engineers explaining the sophisticated technologies used. An hour of ‘war machines’ on the Discovery Channel would have been much better. We tried our best to do ‘paisa vasool’. We clicked pictures of the models and ourselves. We read the charts. But even if we had done that for a year, we wouldn’t have got our money’s worth.

Then we thought we could try to eat away our sorrows. We headed to the ‘food court’. It was like the kumbh mela. It was overflowing with people. Many were dining on the floor. I had to take one step at a time, carefully, to avoid all the land mines, read people and plates, to make it to the stalls. While the air show didn’t take my breath away, the price list certainly did. I thought the inflation rate in India had reached Zimbabwean proportions. A muffin was for 50 bucks. Maybe they had prepared the food in space, or used stealth technology to enhance the taste! Yeah, whatever.

Why should life be so cruel? Why can’t a guy enjoy himself without a gal on V-Day? [:P] After all the glowing reports in the media, it was a big letdown. The 800 bucks could have been to better use. Maybe charity or watch three Himesh movies or drown my sorrows in a pub and get beaten up! At least the latter would have given me a great story to tell for aeons to come. So that was the crash landing of my soaring dreams of a great air show.

A tribute to my SONY DSC-T10

A picture is worth a thousand words. And my camera has recently completed 10,000 pictures. So that’s 10 million words! But I’ll try to sum it up in a few hundred words here. Over the past 20 months or so, I have used this wonderful gadget to take scores of pictures and videos of the many memorable moments of my life. I whole heartedly agree that it was every cent well spent by my brother who purchased it for a princely sum of $400. It has been very reliable and hasn’t given me any problems at all so far and is working as well as it was 20 months back. The picture and video quality is awesome, as evident from the high class photos and videos in my orkut profile!

This camera has been used to capture many cherished moments. It has been used for the wild birthday celebrations in BITS, the farewell, the many trip and treks I have gone on, family occasions and most innovatively perhaps, to scan books and notes before exams! I wasn’t an avid photographer before I got this camera. I couldn’t be relied on to take a clear picture. Now I can safely say I am a semi professional [self proclaimed!]. I have learnt to use the more sophisticated modes of the camera. I have moved beyond the ‘only-auto-mode’ phase. There is still lot to be learnt though because this camera is loaded with many adjustable settings. Besides, this camera is very handy and easy fits into the pocket like a cell phone. Its sleek looks certainly catch the eye!

The only feature that is lacking perhaps is flash with the video mode present in some cell phone cameras. Also it is quite difficult to capture clear pictures of scenes with low illumination. I have recently purchased a tripod to aid in me in that regard. But unlike the camera, it is not very portable. Hence I don’t use it much.

I am very attached to it and it is one of my most prized possessions. That makes me a little possessive about it. So guys please don’t feel bad if I hesitate to lend it to you. Thank you SONY for this brilliant piece of engineering. The photos in this blog are some of my best pictures.

Karzzzz -- You will pay this debt wid your life!!!

Movie Review

Guess who's back, back again??? Himesh!!!! the legend of bollywood is back!! After his blockbuster debut movie, Aap Ka Suroor - The real love story, Himesh has proved to be a real talent in having the audience in splits within minutes with his acting and dialogs in Karzzzz.. I apologize to himesh bhai for not seeing the first day first show. But hey, the fun never sets when himesh settles debts (pun intended)

I paid homage to himesh's new movie Karzzzz, which supposedly had the tag line Vengeance Is Back, at Lido mall on saturday nite.. N boy was it the best 3 hrs of my life for a very long time. Himesh's acting and dialog delivery are mind boggling.. And the story line is full of suspense that i was on the edge of the seat for most of the 3 hrs.. I didnt c the original Karzzzz mind u.. I could go on and on the awesomeness that is himesh!! But i don think i would do justice to this masterpiece by describing it in my blog. You have got 2 c it 2 beliv it..

However i'll still mention some of the 'cheeeaaaq' and 'ma ma mass' parts of the movie.. My personal favourite was the cool and awesome way himesh claps 2 open the safe.. That ws truely legendery.. Then there was the fight scene in which himesh takes off from a short run up.. 2012 medal propects there.. the costumes throughout the movie were..well.. masss.. I think govinda shud take a walk... n Urmila too had a sexy full golden outfit.. made here look like a character from Drona!! the scene wid 2 himesh's is a spiritual experience!! All the single guys out dere (including myself) shud tk coaching frm himesh fr flirting.. I m sure ne gal wud fall for such stuff.. the ice cream scene ws very romantic!! I mus also mention his constant sideways cool pocket maar (reference Vaibhav reviews) look.. No top view or front view.. only side view.. N looks like bcoz of the financial meltdown, himesh resorted to cost cutting measures in the make-up area.. A person supposed 2 b 25 yrs older 2 himesh looks younger than him.. or is it becoz our evergreen himesh is turning brown?? :P

Himesh is a gr8 self proclaimed dude.. the way the gals faint during his concerts, n how he proclaims himself 2 b a rock star.. N the dialog in which they say aap ka suroor was a super hit!! (holla holla to that!!) Besides himesh's dancing really inspires all aspiring dancers like me.. I must make a passing comment on the several successful attempts at comedy in the movie.. those were the only parts in the movie when i ws nt laughing!! :D

On the whole a gr8 all round performance by himesh.. 5 star rating by me!! And now a few points which point to the fact that i m the gr8est himesh fan of all time.. self proclaimed jus like my idol himesh!!
  • I was movie free since january( meaning i didnt go 2 cinema hall since jan) And i broke the run by goin for Karzzzz
  • Aap ka suroor is the only movie, hindi or english, that i have since more than 1.5 times. I have seen it 3 times for the record..
  • Himesh himself has acknowledge me in Karzzzz.. there is a chracter named Dr. Daniel in the movie.. (For those who have seen the movie, dont comment on this part!! )
All in all Himesh has really spiced up my miserable pre-himesh life!!!
